It is illegal to undertake a street collection without a licence from the local authority.
Street collection permits are normally issued to cover a period of one or two days. With regard to vetting and checking to ascertain whether the organisation applying is genuine or not, the applicant must provide documentary evidence from the charity for which the collection is for, and must include a letter from the charity, authorising the street collection.
