Voting
Service Outline
To vote at an election or referendum you must be registered to vote. You can register to vote if you are:
- over 16 (but you cannot vote until you are 18)
- a British or Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Irish Republic or other European Union state
- not otherwise disqualified from registration.
There are three ways you can vote:
Postal Voting - you can have a postal vote instead of going to your polling station. We can send it to any address, even abroad. But, bear in mind that we must receive the ballot paper back by the day of the election.
Proxy Voting - you can have a proxy vote if you cannot get to the polling station on polling day. This is where you appoint somebody to vote for you. They then go along to your polling station and cast your vote. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is no later than 5pm on the sixth working day before polling day, except in cases of medical emergency, when you can apply until 5pm on polling day.
Postal Proxy Voting - if your proxy is going to be away from home on the day of the election, they can apply for their proxy ballot paper to be posted to them.
