Manchester Armed Forces Day 2009: The Big Manchester Thank You
The first ever national Armed Forces Day will honour the outstanding contribution made by current members of the Armed Forces and by veterans of all ages.
On 27 June 2009, Manchester will show its appreciation and support of the Armed Forces and veterans. Look out for interactive activities and military taster sessions taking place in the city centre.
Piccadilly Gardens: 12 noon - 4pm
- Music from Greater Manchester Police Band
- Military taster sessions with Civilian Military Fitness (external site)
- Army Climbing Wall
- Football shoot out with the Royal Navy
- Information about the Armed Forces including the Royal Navy information vehicle.
Exchange Square, Cathedral Gardens and Urbis: 12 noon - 4pm
- The marching band of the King's Division
- RAF information vehicle
- Information about the Royal British Legion and Veteran organisations
Armed Forces Personnel and Veterans Travel to Manchester For Free
NCP Manchester
On 27 June 09, Armed Forces personnel and veterans can park free at Manchester Central (GMEX) Car Park only. NCP Manchester (external site).
GMPTE
Thanks to System One Travelcards and GMPTE Metrolink, free one-day bus and Metrolink travelcards are available for members of the Armed Forces and veterans for use on Armed Forces Day. The Travelcards will entitle holders to free bus and tram travel for the whole day. The one-day Bus Savers allow travel on any bus in Greater Manchester and can be collected (on production of Armed Forces ID or veterans badge) from GMPTE Travelshops from 22 June 09. GMPTE Metrolink Travelcards allow travel anywhere on the Greater Manchester tram network and are available to collect (on production of Armed Forces ID or veterans badge) from GMPTE Travelshops on 27 June 09. Please show your Armed Forces ID or Veterans Badge when collecting your pass. If you are already a concessionary pass holder, you should use this as usual.
