The First Executive

Top of the agenda for me today at our Executive meeting is the follow-up report arising from the setback we have had in the Eccleshall Street area. This report was on how we can accelerate regeneration activity in adjacent parts of Clayton and gave some confidence that subject to resident consultation we can get large-scale activity underway in a matter of weeks.

We also look at how we engage with young people and we agree a People Strategy, to ensure that we get the best out of our employees in helping Manchester improve life for all our communities.

We agree to take action on loan sharks in the city - watch out for more on this in a few weeks - and we move forward to help regeneration of specific properties in Phillips Park and Whalley Range, in the latter case using relatively new compulsory purchase powers to bring empty properties back into use.

Then a whole afternoon of meetings, including the Design Review Board, which is looking at how to ensure that our new schools meet high environmental standards, how much that will cost, and how much it would cost in the long-term not to do that.

And in the evening I meet up with visitors from Australia who are developing a knowledge industry business proposition with companies here in Manchester at a number of sites in the city. I won't say what or where but I'm always eager to welcome prospects for more Manchester jobs.
