Manchester City Council

Out and About

My responsibilities at the Council include external relationships, something I've been quite busy with over the last couple of days. Yesterday evening I went over to Liverpool to see my good friend Joe Anderson to discuss the programme for next year's Festival of Business.

Although it will be largely based in Liverpool, four of the events will take place in Manchester and we will be contributing to some of those taking place at the other end of the East Lancs Road. It promises to be a City of Culture-quality event with incredibly strong international representation. A real opportunity not just for Liverpool but the whole of the North West to show what we have to offer on the world stage.

This morning I met two members of the team ( Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage, and Barry Quirk, Chief Executive of Lewisham ) who are spending the week doing a peer review of Oldham Council. I did one of these a few years ago ( in Greenwich ) and it was a very intense week looking at virtually every aspect of what the Council did. Most of my contact with Oldham is through AGMA and the Combined Authority where they play a very positive role. This afternoon I went to Salford to meet a digital entrepreneur with an app development already reaching an international market, something that fits very well with GM's internationalisation ambitions. And this evening I join Bury Council leader Mike Connolly for Bury-v-Mansfield at Gigg Lane. Won't be quite the Etihad experience but looking forward to it nevertheless.
