Maine Road development kicks off

Today I made a familiar journey to Maine Road in Moss Side, the site of Manchester City's former stadium, to help kick off the new development there.

I was delighted to be joined by City legend Mike Summerbee who was happy to talk about his three decades of proud association with Moss Side and the many friends he had in the area.

City are flourishing in their new home at the City of Manchester stadium, of course, but the Maine Road site - which will be known as The Maine Place - will make an exciting contribution to Moss Side's future. With more than 400 homes, mainly aimed at families, it will help boost housing quality and choice in the area. The site will also be the home of a new primary school and, we hope, a health centre, and with green space to remind us of the footballing past it will be a real community focal point.

Current Moss Side residents are being given the first opportunity to buy homes in the new development, local firms are being given the opportunity to win contracts for parts of the building work, and with a local labour and training scheme, local people can also access the jobs created in its construction. The Maine Place should prove, in every sense, a home win.
