Roads - we regularly grit about half of Manchester's roads (approx 570km): we include bus routes, busy commuter routes and other busy roads that serve hospitals, schools, the airport, large employment and industrial centre's and some local access roads.
Pavements - we also grit over 50km of pavements and cycle paths, including busy pedestrian areas in the city centre, district shopping centre's and other pavements linking transport interchanges etc.
Our decision to grit is based on this combined information from the Met office’s daily forecasts, road sensor and weather station located in the city, which supplies us with temperature and condition of roads.
Roads are gritted based on this information.
Pavements are gritted when the forecast is for prolonged periods of ice or snow.
Once the decision is made we notify the emergency services, councillors, schools and hospitals.
Here you will find a list the roads, pavements and cycle paths that are gritted whenever the decisions are made to grit
