High Rise Recycling Project

  1. What the project will do

In some blocks there are lots of bins, but not enough of them are recycling bins.

We looked at one block that had 21 large communal bins for rubbish, but only two for recycling.

We tried changing six of the general bins to recycling bins. All the bins are now being used and people who live there can recycle more of their rubbish.

As this worked well, we are using Clean City funding to change some bins to recycling bins in 44 more blocks.

It will also pay for signs to make sure that the right rubbish goes in the right bin. That way it can all be taken away and be recycled properly.

  3. Latest news

We've taken away 200 normal bins and put in 500 recycling bins right across the city.

We've started seeing results with the amount of rubbish being recycled going up by 4% already.

We've found that some people are doing the right thing by recycling, but putting it in the recycling bin inside a plastic bag. This causes problems as they have to be removed before the recycling done.

We're now put stickers on the bins saying 'no plastic bags'. By making people aware of the issue we've started to reduce the problem.

Find out how the other projects are going on the Clean City Facebook page.
