Hoarding permit

  2. Summary

    Hoarding, which encroaches or projects over the highway, requires a licence.

    Safe walking zones must be provided at ground level when carrying out building work, maintenance or demolition to any property which is adjacent to the road (carriageway, footpath or alley).

    Permits are valid for a maximum of 365 days, if you require a permit for longer, then please contact us first to discuss. 

    If a site cabin is also required, then as long as this is placed within the Hoarding then a separate site cabin permit is not required.   

    Please note:
    There is an embargo within the city centre perimeter that no Hoarding can be erected between 16Nov – 4Jan.

    Only apply for a hoarding permit from us if the location fails within Manchester City Council check which council.

  3. Fees

    Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you will be notified of the fees payable and sent a link to the online payment system. All payments must be made via the online system by credit or debit card.

    Fees: Administration charge £112 plus every month the structure is subject to the following monthly inspection charge:

    • Inspection fee (area up to 25m2) £56 per four week period  
    • Inspection fee (area up to 50m2) £84 per four week period  
    • Inspection fee (area up to 75m2) £112 per four week period  
    • Inspection fee (area up to 100m2) £140 per four week period  
    • Inspection fee (area up to 125m2) £168 per four week period  
    • Inspection fee (area greater than 125m2) £196 per four week period

    Please note -  we define a month as a four week period

  4. Application, guidance notes or terms and condition

    Terms and conditions

    Apply for a hoarding permit once you have submitted your application please email the following supporting documentation to: highwayapplications@manchester.gov.uk

    • Upload a copy of your Public Liability Insurance not less than £10 million; and 
    • Upload a scale plan of the site showing the position of the structure / obstruction on the road or pavement.

  5. Attachments required

    • You must provide evidence of 'Public Liability' Insurance (not less than £10 million); and
    • A scale plan of the site showing the position of the structure/obstruction on the highway/road.

  6. Processing and timescales

    Once your application has been submitted, we will contact you within 5 working days.

    Please note, in some instances we may need to visit the proposed site and discuss the proposed works in more detail, before we can progress the application.

  8. Validity and renewals

    The licence is valid for the period approved.
