Shorthand

  1. The materials in this collection were gathered by John Eglington Bailey who was an authority on shorthand and founder of the Manchester Phonographic Union. The collection was presented to our libraries in 1899 by Councillor Henry Boddington. It contains many rare items particularly from the 17th and early 18th century.

    We hold over a thousand books and manuscripts relating to shorthand, cryptography, spelling reform and international language.

  3. How to access

    Ask a member of staff in the Central Library search room for a list of items.

    You can also look at items from the collection in the search room, please make an appointment (with at least one day notice).
