Dear citizens of Manchester - I write to your representative, the Mayor, but this letter it is addressed to all of you. - - I am an Italian and live in Verona. The first time I visited England was in 1981. I was a student and I've never been abroad, the first city I saw was London, the second Manchester. Unlike the first one, I was very impressed by the incredible cordiality and open-mindedness of the inhabitants of your city and the immense humanity that characterized them. - I returned to Manchester very often in the following years, the city today is completely transformed from the urban point of view, but one thing has not changed: intellectual vivacity and the great sense of solidarity. - During these 36 years, your city has been through many problems, as in other parts of England: the struggles of workers' rights in Mrs. Thatcher's years, the hooligans in the stadiums, the IRA terrorism. This terrible period will pass, and most of all, it will pass without changing Manchester citizens. - In this sad moment I want you to know that there are many people like me who think and say "I love Manchester" or even better "I'm Mancunian". - With affection and admiration, - Marzia Bersani - Verona Italy -
