  2. Summary

    To carry on a business as a motor salvage operator in Manchester, you must be registered with us.

    You are required to register as a Motor Salvage Operator if you deal:
    a) wholly or partly in the recovery for reuse or sale of salvageable parts from motor vehicles and the subsequent sale, or other disposal for scrap, of the remainder of the vehicles concerned;
    b) wholly or mainly in the purchase of written-off vehicles and their subsequent repair and resale;
    c) wholly or mainly in the sale or purchase of motor vehicles which are to be the subject (whether immediately or on a subsequent resale) of any activities mentioned in paragraphs (a) and (b) above;
    d) wholly or mainly in activities falling within paragraphs (b) and (c).

  5. Attachments required

    You must include two of the following: a) Photo driving licence; b) Passport; or c) Birth certificate. It is necessary for the applicant to make an appointment with Licensing to hand deliver the documents that accompany the application form. We will then do all the necessary checks and give all documents back to the applicant on the same day. Please do not send documents in the post, we must see the original documents. Call 0161 234 5004 to make an appointment.

  6. Processing and timescales

    Registration cannot be finalised until all police checks have been completed.

  8. Validity and renewals

    Registration lasts for three years from the date on which the person was registered.

    For registration to continue, a person must apply to renew their registration before the end of this three-year period.
