Computers & libraries questions

The following are frequently asked questions about Computers & libraries

Why must I authenticate my library membership in order to use the online reference library?

The online library information resources are generally premium databases for which we pay a subscription fee to access. The terms of subscription normally specify that they be made available to library members or personal visitors to the library only.

What do I do if my library PIN is unrecognised?

I have been prompted for additional log in information while trying to use the online reference library

Users may have to re-authenticate their membership to view some online resources if accessing them via the library catalogue. This will require the user to repeat, or submit simple additional information to the resource provider.

If additional details are required, instructions are provided. For example, the user may be asked to add the prefix MAN to the borrower number at the relevant prompt.

Do copyright restrictions apply to the online reference library?

Yes. Usually websites will provide notification informing the user what they may or may not do with the information presented. Generally speaking you will be allowed to make single copies of extracts from these sites. These copies may be saved or emailed to yourself or a friend for personal and study use (many sites provide helpful information about the way to include a citation to an online source in a bibliography). It won't be permissible to make multiple copies of extracts or use any copies for commercial purposes. Most sites will have a link to a legal notices or similar page which should give you more information about such restrictions.

Can the online reference library be used in schools and colleges?

The online reference library resources can be accessed from any PC with an internet connection but they should only be used as sources of information for individual library members and should not be used as teaching resources.
