Will my child be allowed to attend a primary school not near to our home. How difficult is it going to be to get a place?
Children are allowed to attend primary schools not near to their homes. Parents/carers can apply for places in any Manchester primary schools.
Each primary school has a set number of places in each year group. Where the number of children asking for a place is within the set number of places, then every child will get a place.
If there are not enough places, then the places are given out in accordance with the school's admissions policy. For community and voluntary controlled primary schools the admissions policy is as follows:
Category 1: Children in public care.
Category 2: Children with exceptional medical or social needs.
Category 3: Children who have an older sister of brother already attending the school, living at the same address and who will still be at the school when the child is due to start. This includes adopted siblings, step-siblings and foster children.
Category 4: If after Category 1, 2 and 3 admissions, the school still has spare places, then further admissions will be prioritised according the distance between the child's permanent address and the school, measured in a straight line. Those children living nearest the school will be admitted until all the places have been taken up.
Voluntary aided Church of England, Roman Catholic and Jewish primary schools each have their own admissions policy.
Parents/carers should contact these schools directly for further information or alternatively, contact the Admissions Team on 0161 234 7163 / 7150 / 7151.
