What is the maximum age that a grant will be awarded for going to university?

There is no maximum age for grants to be awarded for going to university although there is a maximum age of 65 for applying for the Maintenance Loan of 4625 (maximum). The help available is as follows:

  • Maintenance Grant = £2835 (based on household income. The income of parents for students under 25 and of spouse/ civil partner for students of any age who are married or in a civil partnership or partner for students over 25.)
  • Tuition Fee Loan = £3450 (not based on household income)
  • Maintenance Loan = £4625 (based on household income. If you are eligible for the maintenance grant the first £1200 of this entitlement is deducted from the entitlement to maintenance loan giving an entitlement of the loan of £3673. Students who are 65 or over will not be entitled to the maintenance loan.)

There is other help available such as Disabled Student Allowances, Childcare grant and help with travel costs if you are undertaking a placement abroad. There is no age limit for these grants. For more information go to Student Finance England. www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/goodbye.html
