Libraries

Why is the library closed for so long?

The building is in need of specialist renovation: its piecemeal maintenance is both difficult and expensive. Roof repairs are needed, improvements to wiring and other systems have to be made and access for disabled people must be improved. We aim to sensitively and carefully restore this iconic and well-loved building to its former glory: this relatively short-term closure will ensure its long-term survival.
Library services have seen enormous change over the years. Central Library staff have had to rearrange space to accommodate more and more services, all very different from those envisaged when the building first opened in 1934. Architects have been commissioned to rethink how the building is used, making it more accessible for all, with more stock on display and more room for exciting new services and attractions. What comes next will be the latest chapter in the ongoing story of Manchester's library service.
