Anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre - 16 August

In recognition of the anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, which took place on 16 August 1819, the Lord Mayor of Manchester visited different points of interest around the city linking to this import

He laid a wreath at the site of the massacre on Southmill Street (off Peter Street) which is now commemorated by a plaque honouring those who were killed and injured.

The Lord Mayor then visited the John Rylands Library on Deansgate to view an historic manuscript recording compensation given to those injured in the 1819 massacre.

The Lord Mayor's final visit was to the People's History Museum in Spinningfields to view the permanent exhibition detailing the events that occurred at Peterloo. Among the items is a truncheon taken from a constable at Peterloo and donated to the museum by a former Lord Mayor of the city.
