Manchester Joint Health Unit

The Joint Health Unit is a key part of the public health system in Manchester. It is a team that focuses on strategic planning and partnership working for health improvement and tackling health inequalities. It is based with the Council, but jointly funded by the Council and Manchester Primary Care Trust (PCT).

Talking Health
Manchester Primary Care Trust plans, arranges and funds NHS care for everyone in Manchester.  The NHS celebrates its 60th birthday this summer and the PCT have launched 'Talking Health' to find out how you feel about the service you are receiving now and how they can make it better for the future.

As part of Talking Health, please could you take time to complete this short survey to help understand what the PCT can do to improve NHS services in Manchester.

The survey can be found at: http://www.manchesterpct.nhs.uk/talkinghealth/default.aspx

History
Manchester has some of the most challenging health problems in the country. Life expectancy is amongst the lowest in England, and compared with national averages people are more likely to die from cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease and accidents. Despite the best efforts of the NHS, there is a wide health gap between the city and the country as a whole. It is now recognised that many organisations, not just the NHS, have a vital part to play. Consequently the Unit was established to co-ordinate the efforts of all agencies to improve health in the city.

Service Outline
The Unit leads on a number of key public health priorities. It co-ordinates the Health and Well Being Partnership within the Local Strategic Partnership, and manages the allocation of partnership resources. It supports the work of the Health and Well Being Overview and Scrutiny Committee and also provides a public health information, intelligence and research function to the NHS, the Council and other partner organisations. It also leads on:

  • Smoke Free Manchester - lead and support the work towards a "Smoke Free Manchester"
  • Food Futures - promote healthy eating through the Manchester "Food Futures" Strategy
  • Valuing Older People - improve the quality of life for older people through the Valuing Older People Initiative
  • Teenage Pregnancy Partnership - co-ordinate the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy to provide better prevention and support
  • Health & Regeneration - lead on the building of new health facilities in regeneration areas
  • NHS Resources - secure a fair share of NHS resources for the benefit of Manchester residents
  • NHS Jobs - ensure NHS jobs are accessible to local people
  • Alcohol misuse - raise awareness of the harm caused by alcohol misuse through local campaigns
  • Health Statistics - collate the latest health statistics for Manchester wards and the city as a whole.  Download the  latest compendium of statistics here.
