Definition of a complaint

A complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction by one or more members of the public about the council's action or lack of action, or about the standard of a service. It does not matter if the action or service was provided by the council itself or a person or body acting on behalf of the council.

When dealing with enquiries or complaints we will:

  • Deal with them honestly, fairly and politely
  • Give prompt and accurate advice, information and offer resolution where needed
  • Respect a person's right to confidentiality
  • Take into account individual needs
  • Keep customers informed about what is happening with their enquiry/complaint
  • Listen to what customers have to say
  • Take action, where appropriate, to improve our service

Our intent is to resolve complaints as quickly as possible with the minimum of disruption to the customer and to learn from the complaint.

Complaints may be made in person, by telephone, textphone, e-mail, fax or letter.
