Schools & education Apply for a school travel pass

Some children get a free travel pass to get to and from school on a bus, train or tram in Greater Manchester. Secondary pupils can choose a cycle voucher instead of a pass.

Free passes for primary school children

Who qualifies?

  • Manchester residents at a primary school more than two miles – but less than six miles – from home if there is no nearer, similar provision available.
  • 'Looked after children' in Manchester care whose primary school is more than two miles from their care home or foster home.

Free passes for secondary school children

Who qualifies?

  • Manchester residents at a Manchester secondary school more than three miles from home.
  • 'Looked after children' in Manchester care whose school is three-to-fifteen miles from their care home or foster home.
  • Manchester residents at a school outside Manchester between three and 15 miles from their home if there is no nearer, similar provision available.
  • Pupils in years 10 or 11 who have recently moved to Manchester and want to stay at a school outside Manchester.

Passes are ready 4 weeks after you apply. Pick them up at the school.

Cycle voucher
Secondary pupils can get a cycle voucher instead of a travel pass. The voucher buys a bike and cycle equipment up to the value of £180 (£90 for Year 11 children).
