Manchester offers a free travel pass or a cycle voucher to some children. A travel pass allows a child to travel to and from school free of charge on a bus, train or tram in the Greater Manchester area. and usually last for one academic year.
Help with travel costs for children going to primary school
Who can qualify?
Looked After Children in Manchester care who go to a primary school more than two miles from their care home or foster home.
Children living in Manchester, who go to a primary school more than two miles but less than six miles from home, where nearer, similar provision in Manchester is not available.
Help with travel costs for children going to secondary school
Who can qualify?
Children who live in Manchester who are attending a Manchester secondary school or academy that is more than three miles from their home address.
Looked after children in Manchester care who go to a school three to 15 miles from their care home or foster home.
Children who live in Manchester who want to go to a school outside Manchester between three and 15 miles from their home where similar provision is not available.
Children in years 10 or 11 who have recently moved into Manchester and wish to remain at a school which is outside the area.
How to apply
Your child will be able to pick up their free travel pass at school on the first day of term.
What if my child loses their travel pass?
If your child has already received a free travel pass, replacement passes can be obtained from Transport for Greater Manchester. Please contact them on 0161 244 1050 or email@example.com
A cycle voucher is only available to Secondary aged children as an alternative to a travel pass. The cycle voucher entitles the child to a bike and/or cycle equipment up to the value of £180 (£90 for Year 11 children) from selected retailers.
Please note: Children who attend or are allocated a school outside of Manchester, may not be entitled to a travel pass or cycle voucher.
