Environmental problems Micro pigs

Buying a micro pig

Things you need to do before you purchase a Mirco Pig:

  • You MUST have a CPH (County Parish Holding), this is an identification number for the land and building(s) where your pig(s) will be kept - you need to obtain this prior to buying the pig from the Rural Payments Agency;
  • You MUST familiarise yourself with the Animal Health rules. Pet pigs have the same rules applied to them as any other livestock;
  • Once you have purchased your Micro Pig you MUST register it, this is where you will receive a herd number;
  • Your Micro Pig MUST stay on your land for 20 days. This is to protect against disease when pigs are moved around the Country. Most diseases would show within this period, so it effectively limits the spread of disease;
  • You CANNOT move a pig off of your land without filling out a movement licence and wherever your pig goes it will need to stay again for 20 days, this applies to all pigs coming onto land or being moved to new premises these are available free from us, see the Animal Movement Licence page for further information;
  • Do your research, make sure you understand the NEEDS of these pigs. There are different lines and genetics of Micro Pigs, breeders can explain this further to you;
  • You will need a reasonable amount of space, as you will need to make a good size pen;
  • More importantly make sure you are ready to add Micro Pigs to your family and give a lifetime of love and care;
