Bollards and barriers in the city centre
We are responsible for maintaining barriers and bollards on the highway. There are several types of bollards and barriers within the city:
- fixed;
- removable;
- illuminated (lit); and
- automatic.
Fixed bollards are used as security and access control and can be found in pedestrian streets.
Removable bollards are used to prevent access to sites where only temporary use is allowed e.g. by stallholders for on-street market pitches, or for maintenance.
Illuminated (lit) bollards can be seen on islands at traffic lights and road junctions.
Automatic bollards are used in the city centre to manage access to certain areas. The automatic bollards are only in use at certain times of the day, allowing shop and business deliveries to be made. When the automatic bollards are in use, access is only given to authorised vehicles that have been fitted with a special pass called a 'transponder'.
Passes are issued to people who need access during the restricted times.
