Renting a home

'Affordable Housing' is about making homes available to people who would otherwise find it hard to buy or rent. It includes housing rented from a public landlord; as well as 'shared ownership' - where you own a part-share of your home.

Renting from a public landlord

There are lots of not-for-profit landlords in Manchester. The city council used to be by far the biggest, but most council estates have now transferred to new housing trusts that are investing millions of pounds to improve homes and estates.

Many of these landlords are in the Manchester Housing Register; a joint rehousing system which lets you apply for a home with all these organisations, rather than make a separate application to each one.

Other landlords are not members of the Register - you need to apply to them separately. There's a full list on the Housing Corporation website. (The Housing Corporation is a government agency that funds and monitors housing associations and trusts).
