Leisure Services Criteria

Leisure Services has set minimum operating standards for all sports clubs and community activities to work towards, with the support of Leisure Services Sport Specific and Community Team.

The criteria is set for clubs who have not achieved club mark/charter standard to ensure young people are being signposted to a high quality, safe, qualified, open and accessible environment. If a club does not adopt the minimum standards Leisure Services will not be able to support clubs and signpost young people towards.

All clubs that have either achieved the minimum requirements or wanting to work towards the criteria will receive support from Leisure Services staff to develop the club.

On achieving the standards the club will have the opportunity to be advertised in Leisure Services's Club, Coach and Volunteer Programme via Manchester City Council website http://www.manchester.gov.uk/ .

In addition, your club will be advertised on the County Sports Partnership's new website http://www.greatersport.co.uk/ for young people to access and find out what is available in their local area; this will include clubs and community activities in order to engage more young people in sport and physical activity.

Leisure Services criteria is as follows:

Qualified Coaches

Coaches should be qualified to the appropriate standard for their level of responsibility. In general, a 'level 1' qualification enables a coach to assist in coaching and a 'level 2' qualification enables a coach to lead sessions.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearances

Any person working in positions of responsibility of children and vulnerable adults, for example as coaches or club committee members, should undergo a CRB check.

Child Protection and Equity policies

All clubs who work with children and vulnerable adults should have a Child Protection policy that all people in positions of responsibilities follow. They should also have an Equity Policy to ensure that the club is open to all members of the community, and are not at risk of discriminating against anyone.

Safe environments

Sports activities need to take place in a safe and appropriate environment, and a coach or committee member should carry out a risk assessment before activities go ahead.
