Changes to Social Care for Adults - November 2011
Why and how social care is changing
The Directorate for Adults, Health and Wellbeing provides social care and support to people living in Manchester who require such services because of age, illness or disability in order to help them improve their health and wellbeing, remain safe, and/or maintain their independence.
The Government's Comprehensive Spending Review reduced Manchester 's funding for 2011-12 and 2012-13. As a result the Directorate is seeking to make savings of £39.5 million over the next 2 years. This means we now have less money to help people in Manchester.
You can also find information about changes we have made to our Fairer Charging policy as a result of a related consultation.
To help us make decisions about how and where we should make these savings we consulted with our customers and asked a number of questions including:
-
Do you agree with our plans to increase our Reablement service? (Reablement is a service that lasts for up to 6 weeks and helps people get back their independence following illness or injury.)
-
How do you feel about us replacing hot meals on wheels with frozen meals instead for those customers that require meals provision and the customer or their carer is able to heat the meal?
-
Do you agree we should increase transport charges to Day Services to £3.50 per journey? We currently charge 40p per journey.
-
Do you agree with Manchester City Council no longer supplying equipment under £25.00 free of charge?
-
Do you agree with our plan to look at preventative services such as Telecare?
-
Would you consider using the internet for shopping and alternatives for domestic services?
-
How do you feel about our proposal for changing the way we allocate money to meet needs? This may mean that some people will get less money?
We listened to what customers said and changed some of our plans as a result.
