City Car Club

'Pay By The Hour' Cars

This exciting scheme was launched in 2006 to benefit residents and businesses across Manchester city centre.  The successful partnership, between Manchester City Council and City Car Club, provides the city with a Pay By The Hour car hire scheme.

The cars give city centre residents, workers and businesses a greener, more convenient and cost effective alternative to car ownership - whilst reducing congestion.

A fleet of low-emission vehicles are located in dedicated, on-street parking bays on the following city centre streets:

  • Fountain Street
  • High Street
  • Queen Street
  • Samuel Ogden Street
  • Whitworth Street West
  • Cambridge Street
  • Duke Street
  • St Mary's Parsonage
  • Tariff Street

There are also off-street bays located in NCP Car Parks at:

  • Bloom Street
  • Piccadilly Place
  • space 99 of the City Tower Car Park on the 2nd Floor, (deck level)

Locations for on-street bays in areas outside the city centre are being processed.  These include:

  • Ellesmere Street (Coming soon)
  • Dene Road, Didsbury (Coming soon)
  • Nicolas Road, Chorlton

Each car is available for City Car Club members to hire out for as little as half an hour at a time. The number of vehicles is expanding as membership of the scheme increases.

By giving people access to a car for daytime business trips, the scheme aims to encourage them to use public transport, walking or cycling for their main commuter trip into the city centre.

Similarly, city centre residents have the option of using a City Car Club car for those journeys that can't easily be made by public transport, for example to a big supermarket.

Manchester City Council sees City Car Club Pay By The Hour cars as important tools for tackling congestion in Manchester as they offer practical, cost-effective access to a car when needed, complementing public transport, walking and cycling.

Each Pay By The Hour car has the potential to take at least five privately owned cars off the road thereby reducing the demand for parking and private car ownership.
