Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

South Manchester and Wythenshawe Locality JNSA

This is the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) for South Manchester and Wythenshawe. Locality JSNAs have been produced in recognition of the fact that commissioning activities are increasingly being carried out at locality level and, for the JSNA to be most useful, it is vital that the analysis and interpretation of the data is also performed at locality level.

South Manchester is today regarded as one of the most successful and desirable parts of the city. From the affluent and vibrant suburbs of Chorlton and Didsbury to the major open space of the Mersey Valley, the generally held perception of South Manchester is of successful suburbs focused on attractive 'village' centres with relatively affluent and well educated populations.

Wythenshawe is a distinctive district, separated from the rest of Manchester by motorways and green spaces. The area is remarkably green in comparison with the rest of Manchester, including 27 woods and 13 parks. The largest park is Wythenshawe Park which is the second largest in Manchester .

The document is divided as follows:

The Foreword, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2

This section of the document outlines the background to the main city-wide JSNA and the aims of the Locality JSNAs. It provides a brief profile of the geography of South Manchester and Wythenshawe. It also outlines the local partnership arrangements that have been adopted to produce this Locality JSNA for South Manchester and Wythenshawe.

Chapter 3: Our Population

This section contains a profile of the health and social care needs of the population in South Manchester and Wythenshawe based on ward-level data in the Locality JSNA Core Dataset. To provide a comparison within the locality, the area is broken down further into two sub-districts: South Manchester and Wythenshawe. To aid comparison, the profile follows the same broad structure as the Manchester JSNA.

Chapter 4: Local Priorities

This section provides a summary of the common priority themes that underpin the work of the main agencies working in the locality. It identifies those issues that the agencies have in common and which form the basis for a more enhanced level of joint working in the future.

Chapters 5 and 6 - Where to find out more and next steps

Chapter 5 contains a list of other information reports, plans and strategies relating to South Manchester and Wythenshawe and how they can be accessed. Chapter 6 outlines some of the work that will be taken forward in the future in order to ensure that the Locality JSNA continues to be a 'living' document that is of practical use to commissioners and other professionals working in South Manchester and Wythenshawe.
