Some landlords and organisations who manage privately rented properties need a licence from us to continue to rent out their properties.
Licensing leads to decent housing standards and better management of properties for private tenants. It helps us improve neighbourhoods for the whole community.
There are three types of licensing of the privately rented accommodation. The first two cover houses divided into flats, officially called 'houses in multiple occupation' or HMOs:
- mandatory licensing
- additional licensing
- selective licensing
