Italians

Anthony Rea's book, 'Manchester's Little Italy, memories of the Italian colony of Ancoats' was published in 1988, and the author has gone on to produce a comprehensive website, http://www.ancoatslittleitaly.com/.

The website book list includes a book which gives a factual account of the development of the Italian community of Manchester from the late 1800s to the Thirties. This is 'La Colonia Italiana di Manchester (1794 -1932)' by Professor Azeglio Valgimigli. Unfortunately for those who cannot read Italian, the translated version referred to on the website is not available in the Library. There are also two items not included on the website book list. Firstly, there is an article by Paul de Felice, 'Reconstructing Manchester's Little Italy', (Manchester Region History Review, vol. 12, 1998 - pdf file). The author takes an overview of the Italian community, arguing that Valgimigli's book is mainly concerned with middle class Italians and Rea's book with the Italian poor. Secondly, there is a report produced by Margaret Parkes for the Open University: 'The relationship between ethnicity and migrant status of Italians and entrepreneurship with special reference to the Ancoats area of Manchester known as Little Italy in the years 1881 and 1932'.
