Housing support for older or vulnerable people

Retirement housing

If you're over 60 you've probably got decades of experience running your own home. Perhaps you now want the security of knowing help is close by if you need it.

Retirement housing (or 'sheltered housing as it used to be called) comes in a range of properties, each with a member of staff on standby if you need a hand or there's an emergency.

Support, day or night

Choose from apartments, bungalows, and one- or two-bedroom flats. You get your own intercom to contact support staff, day or night; and your own private bathroom and kitchen.

Some properties have social facilities shared between neighbours, and guest rooms for family or friends to stay.

Provided by not-for-profit landlords across Manchester, sheltered homes are available to rent from as little as £55 a week. You could probably get Housing Benefit to pay some or all of your rent.

Finding a home

You need to be registered for rehousing to rent a home like this from a not-for-profit landlord. Make sure you say on the form that you're looking for retirement housing.

Once you're registered, local landlords will consider you for homes that come up in the area you want. But you can increase your chances by checking on the Homefinder website. Some homes are 'first-come-first-served', so you may be able to move in almost straight away.

Or contact a not-for-profit landlord directly to find out what they've got in the area you want.
