What you need to know as a taxi passenger
We are responsible for licensing hackney carriage (cabs) and private hire vehicles and their drivers in Manchester and are committed to providing a quality transport service within the taxi and private hire trade.
It is our responsibility to ensure the taxi and private hire trade in Manchester is operated in a professional manner and that the correct standards of safety and comfort are satisfied by all drivers, vehicles and operators. All hackney carriages vehicles are wheelchair accessible. We regulate the hackney carriage fares and approve fares for private hire.
You should always plan to get home safe and take a taxi you can trust. You should know the difference between a hackney carriage vehicle and a private hire vehicle.
Both hackney carriage and private hire drivers are issued with an id badge showing their photograph and licence details. This badge must be visable and can be worn or displayed in the vehicle.
We do not curently licence Pedicabs and Rickshaws.
We provide taxi ranks where cabs can wait for customers. Most ranks operator on a part time basis but some operation for 24 hours. Certain city centre ranks are supported by taxi marshals during the busy weekend hours.
Up to date taxi and private hire driver, vehicle and operator information is available by viewing the hackney carriage and private hire register.
A black cab driver should hand any found property into us.
