How to pay your council rent

Lots of ways to pay your rent

1. by standing order

This is probably the best way to pay. The money goes in straightaway, and there's no danger you'll forget to pay! We have a simple form for you to print out, fill in and send to your bank. Go to the standing order form. You'll need to put your housing reference number from your rent card). If you can't print out the form, or need advice, phone 03000 112211.

2. online

Use your bank debit card or credit card to pay over the internet. Go to online payments. The money will go into your rent account within two working days. You can pay council tax, insurance and other council bills this way too!

3. by phone

Phone 0161 273 5270 to pay by bank debit card or credit card using our automated service - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Have your housing reference number handy and follow the step-by-step instructions. If you can't use an automated telephone service, phone 03000 112211 during normal office hours. 

4. by telebanking

Ask your bank about this new handy way to pay. You'll need our sort code 08-90-00, account number 61176698, and your housing reference number from your rent card.

5. at the post office

Use your rent card to pay at any post office. Pay over the counter and they'll swipe your card to credit your rent account. It's a free service. Please keep the receipt.

6. by post 

Send a cheque (made out to Manchester City Council) to: Housing, RENT INCOME GROUP, PO Box 532, M60 2LA. Write your name, address and housing reference number (from your rent card) on the back of the cheque. Don't send cash through the post!

7. at a paypoint or payzone 

Look out for the Paypoint or Payzone sign at your local shop or petrol station. Pay over the counter and they'll swipe your card to credit your rent account. It's a free service. Please keep the receipt.

8. at our customer service centre

Use your rent card and pay by cash, cheque, debit card or credit card. Come to Number One First Street at the junction of Whitworth Street West and Albion Street in the city centre. Please keep your receipt.

9. at a housing office

Our two housing offices are only open a few hours a week - so it's better to pay using one of the other methods if you can. But if you want to pay that way come to:

  • Collyhurst housing office, Monsall St, M40 8QF
    Tuesday or Friday: 10am to 12noon
  • Brunswick housing office, Bramwell Drive, M13 9SU
    Tuesday or Thursday: 10am to 12noon
