Repairs: tenants' responsibility

Repairs you must do yourself

Housing repairs you must doThe city council must do certain repairs by law — on the structure of your home, on gas, electricity, plumbing, heating installations and so on. These repairs are free.

But there are other, smaller jobs that you must do yourself — although we will do many of them if everyone in the household is elderly or disabled. And there are other repairs you must pay for if the damage has been caused deliberately or by neglect.

Examples of repairs you must do yourself

  1. faulty fittings not put in by the city council (unless you have an agreement for us to maintain it) — such as cookers, fridges, showers, window blinds, window locks
  2. discoloured plastic bath
  3. surface cracks in basin or toilet
  4. broken tidy-dry
  5. hairline cracks in plaster
  6. broken or missing edging on a kitchen unit (Unless everyone in the household is elderly or disabled)
  7. broken or missing smoke detector  (Unless everyone in the household is elderly or disabled)
  8. broken clothes post  (Unless everyone in the household is elderly or disabled)
  9. broken or missing plugs and chains for a basin or sink  (Unless everyone in the household is elderly or disabled)

If you order one of these repairs, we will ask you to do the work yourself.
