Types of Fostering
Short-Break and Emergency Fostering
Short break foster care
There are occasions when we may need to arrange short break foster care for a child. It could be that a long-term carer has to attend a hospital appointment; perhaps the child needs a short break carer to look after them for a weekend or perhaps a week during the school holidays. Sometimes we're asked to help out a family who just need a bit of 'time out'.
We know that some people who would like to become full-time foster carers are initially a little anxious about caring for a child full-time. Becoming a short break carer is the ideal answer, it is a way of being able to foster even if you work full time.
Emergency foster care
We have a rota of foster carers who are able to keep a spare room available for emergencies. You would need to have some experience as a foster carer before offering to join the rota. Children and young people sometimes need a safe family in an emergency on an evening, in the middle of the night or at the weekend.
