What's involved?

Step 1. Find out more about fostering
Read through all the information on our website and if you want further information, request an application pack or contact us.

Step 2. Complete our online form
Read through all the information available on our website then complete our fostering online form. We will then contact you to ask you some more questions about your enqiry.

Step 3. Initial visit
This is your opportunity to ask as many questions as you like about fostering, and how it might affect you. The supervising social worker will also want to find out more about you, your family and where you live.

Step 4. Skills to Foster Preparation Groups
You will learn about the background circumstances that can lead to children going into foster care. You will also have the chance to meet  experienced foster carers, and will be advised about the types of children Manchester Children's Services has who need foster care.

Step 5. Application form submitted and statutory checks completed
We will make background checks with the police (CRB), your GP and the local authority and services where you live. We will also ask for references from employers and people who know you well. 

Step 6. Assessment
The assessment process includes: 

  • Health and safety assessment of your home
  • An assessment of any pets you have
  • Home study (assessment) - this is made during 6-8 visits to you,
    your family and members of your household
  • CRB checks on lodgers, babysitters, children over the age of 16, and
    other significant adults.
  • You will have the chance to read the final report and will be asked to
    sign that you have read it.

Step 7. Fostering Panel
The Fostering Panel will make a recommendation about your approval. You will be invited to attend the panel with the person who has done your  assessment.

Step 8. Approval
Our agency decision-maker makes a decision about your approval.

Step 9. Welcome to Manchester visit
Your individual supervising social worker will contact you to formally welcome you to the service.

Step 10. Placement
If you are approved as a short-term carer, you are likely to be placed with a child/children quite quickly. If you are approved as a long-term carer, it could take a little longer. Matching will be discussed in full with you about all  potential placements.
