What you can claim as a foster carer

Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit
You cannot claim for a foster child/ren - This can only be claimed for a birth child or child on a Residence Order or Special Guardianship Order

Income Support
You cannot claim for a foster child/ren - Foster carers can be eligible for Income Support for themselves and their families but cannot claim for a looked-after child. Income Support and Jobseeker's Allowance are not affected by fostering allowances

Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
Yes you can claim but you must be available for work - This can only be claimed if you are unemployed and actively seeking work, or if you are  working less than 16 hours per week (24 hours if in a partnership)

Working Tax Credit (Family Tax Credit)
Yes you can claim - Fostering counts as 'qualifying paid work'. You can claim but you or your partner must either be in qualifying paid work for at least
16 hours per week if you have a child, or if you are caring for a child of your own or a child on a Residence Order or Special Guardianship Order and you or your partner are in paid work for at least 16 hours per week
