Social services Foster carers' real-life stories

James's story...

A fostering advert on the back of a bus prompted me to call the fostering team. That was 18 years ago and during that time I have looked after 101 children. The children have come from a variety of backgrounds. Some come into your care immediately after birth and need care to help them settle. At one time we had four babies in our care. That was an extremely busy time, with the contact visits with their birth parents and review meetings with other professionals.

I feel I have made a difference to the children’s lives, as the transitions from my care to their adoptive families have always been really smooth. The children were prepared for their next step into a ‘forever family’. We still keep in touch with one of the babies who went on to be adopted – he’s now 14. I can honestly say I would not have done this for so long if I did not thoroughly enjoy it.
