Social services You can foster if you have pets

If you own a pet, you know that they can bring a lot of joy and love to your home.

Pets, especially dogs, can also help children cope with the challenges of moving in with new foster carers.

By the time children are fostered, they may have been neglected, feel scared and be reluctant to develop new relationships with adults. Animals can help children adapt to their new home. And build relationships with their foster carers.

When we recruit new foster carers we may carry out an assessment of any pets as part of the process.

For example, in an assessment for dogs, we make sure they are:

  • friendly with a good temperament
  • house-trained
  • safe around children.

Dog owners make great foster carers.
