Equip Yourself for Independent Living

What Manchester City Council can do to help

At Manchester City Council we can help you work out what equipment, adaptations or technology will help you most. In some cases we can arrange for it to be delivered and installed, and make sure you know how to use it.

However, we don't provide equipment that costs less than £25.00, as it's freely available from high street stores. The sort of daily equipment under £25.00 which might be of use, and where you can buy it can be found here (link to monthly updated list). You can also find details of equipment suppliers on the MyManchesterServices website.

If you want advice about what sort of equipment might help you, the first step is to get in touch with Contact Manchester - Adults and Children's Social Care Contact Service.

We'll ask you some questions to get an understanding of your level of need. If you need cheaper items under £25.00, we'll signpost you to where they can be purchased. If you need more complex equipment, or major adaptations, one of our expert staff will visit you at home to carry out an assessment of your needs. This will look in detail at your situation and help work out with you what equipment or adaptations would best help. If there is someone who cares for you, we might look at what could help them too.

What does it cost?

If, as a result of your assessment you need adaptations to your home, you may have to make a contribution. We will always discuss costs with you before we provide the equipment or arrange adaptations. The costs vary according to the tenure of your home.  For example, if you live in your own home (owner-occupier), we will carry out a means test of your financial resources and ability to pay either a contribution or the entire costs of the adaptations.  We will guide you through the process at all stages and visit you in your own home to discuss this in confidence.
