Changes to do with your non-dependants

How to tell us about changes to do with your non-dependants

Non-dependants are people aged 18 and over who live with you, for example:

  • children who have left school or college and who you no longer get Child Benefit for
  • other relatives
  • friends

If a non-dependant moves into or out of your home, or their income changes while they are living with you, you must tell us straightaway.

Non-dependants affect your benefit because we have to take set amounts off your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit for them. This is because the Government expects them to pay a share of your housing costs and your Council Tax.

You can tell us about changes to do with your non-dependants by downloading and printing our form to report changes in your non-dependants or their circumstances. Fill it in and send it to us at the address on the form, together with the evidence we ask for. Or contact us and ask us to send you the 'reporting changes in non-dependants' form from the website.
