Who can claim?
You can claim Housing Benefit if you pay rent to live in your home; and:
- have a low income whether from benefits or low-paid work, including if you are working part-time or you are self-employed; or
- are moving from benefits into work; and
- have savings of less than £16,000. (You may have more savings than this and still get Housing Benefit if you or your partner get the guaranteed part of Pension Credit).
If you have a partner we will include their income and savings as well when we work out benefit.
You can sometimes get benefit when you are temporarily living away from home as long as you intend to return to the property.
Some students with special circumstances can get benefit.
Housing Benefit can be complicated and there are exceptions to the rules.
If you are still not sure whether you can get help with your rent, claim anyway and we will tell you.
