Carer's Allowance

Carers can be family members, neighbours or friends. Some might be caring full time or working and caring.  Some carers might want to go back into education or into work. 

Who can claim?

  • You are aged 16 or over, AND
  • You spend 35 hours or more a week caring for a child or adult, And
  • The child or adult gets Attendance Allowance or the middle or higher care rate of Disability Living Allowance, And
  • You earn no more than £100 a week (from April 2011) net from any paid work that you do. Some care costs and work expenses can be deducted in working out this net figure - get advice.
  • not in full time education - more than 21 hours a week.  Get advice on this as the rules are not straight forward.
