Making a birth registration appointment

Appointments

All birth registrations are by appointment only. To make an appointment to register a birth at the Manchester Register Office please phone 0161 234 5005.

If you want to register the birth at the Manchester Register Office in Heron House, you can also, in most cases, book a birth registration appointment on-line .

If you are a Manchester resident, you may be able to register the birth at a Sure Start centre near you, and find out about the facilities and services they provide. To make an appointment to register a birth at one of the Sure Start centres we visit, please phone the Sure Start centre directly.

(If you are a Trafford, Salford, Bury or Rochdale resident, but your baby was born in a Manchester Hospital, you need to contact the Register Office of your home local authority if you want to register the birth there.)

We will meet our appointment times as closely as possible. If you are late for your appointment we aim to see you within an hour. If you are early we will see you as soon as possible.

You will need to provide the following information:

  • Baby's date and place of birth Baby's forename(s) and surname and how you wish to spell those names
  • mother's full name, date and place of birth, occupation and maiden name/date of marriage (if applicable)
  • Where father's details are being recorded, the same information as for mother is required (see above)

What you need to bring with you.

The only document that you need to bring with you is the "Red Book" (Personal Child Health Record). A record of the birth is sent to us by the hospital.

In addition, in order to improve the quality of the information recorded in the registration we ask  that you bring one of the following documents, for both parents, to the appointment - Passport/Utility Bill/Driving Licence/Marriage or Civil Partnership Certificate. However, you can still make an appointment and register a birth if these documents are unavailable.

You will be asked to sign, to confirm that the information recorded is correct. Please ensure that you check the entry carefully, before signing, as once you have signed, any mistakes can only be corrected if you pay a significant fee. (As of 1 November 2017)

You are welcome to bring your baby with you, but it is not a requirement.

What documents are available.

From 1 November 2017, due to legislative changes, we will no longer be issuing a free short birth certificate. The following documents are available to purchase.

  • standard certificate, showing all the details recorded in the register is available from the registrar, at the time of registration, at a cost of £4.00.
  • You may also purchase a short certificate showing just the child's details for the same price. 

Please note that if you intend to apply for a passport for your child, the Passport Office will ask to see a standard birth certificate.

Any certificates, for recent events, purchased after registration will cost £7.00 per copy, if applied for in person or in writing, not on-line. Please note that once the register is completed an additional fee may be payable. Please see 'Making an application for a copy certificate'
