Information for parents
Open access playschemes
This information has been put together to provide residents in Manchester with information on local open access play services during the school holidays. It also provides information on what play services provide and what you should do if you have any queries about play provision in your area. The playschemes listed are voluntary and independent organisations, which have been funded by the City Council to operate throughout Manchester during the holidays. You can contact playschemes directly for further details but please remember you will not be able to pre-book places.
What is open access play service?
An Open Access playscheme offers supervised play opportunities for school aged children during school holidays within their local community. Play sessions are usually between 2 to 3 hours in duration, mornings and/or afternoons. Parents/carers need to be aware that Open Access playschemes do not provide care for their children in their absence. Open Access playschemes are not usually suitable for working parents who should seek Out of School Care provision by telephoning the Children's Information Service on 0800 083 7921.
How much will it cost?
Costs vary according to activities. You will usually be charged a small entrance fee per child and asked for a contribution towards some of the more expensive activities such as day-trips to sea side, cinema etc.
What play opportunities are provided?
Playschemes provide a range of opportunities in an informal setting providing children with a choice of activities including crafts, group games, quiet/relaxation activities, trip/off site activities to local parks and amenities etc.
How do I know my child will be safe?
Playschemes, which provide for children under 8 years, are registered to National Standards. Staff organisation ensures children are supervised at all times. Playworkers are required to have relevant experience and attend playwork training. Staff and volunteers undergo clearance procedures to ensure their suitability to work with children. Health and Safety procedures are in place according to national and local requirements. Playschemes which only offer services to children aged over 8 years operate to Manchester City Council Standards.
What information should be available for parents/carers?
Each playscheme operates on an individual basis and has written information for parents/carers explaining the terms and conditions of their service, i.e. charges, admission criteria, age range, opening times, policies and procedures. Information that should be on display within the playscheme include:- Play Programme, Insurance Certificate, Registration Certificate (under 8's only), Complaints/Concerns Procedure.
My child may need some additional support to attend the local playscheme - what should I do?
Your child may have some additional needs requiring some support to attend your local playscheme. Manchester Play may be able to provide additional resources to support your child. For advice and information, please contact Manchester Play Team.
What if I have a concern about the playscheme?
Each playscheme should have a complaints procedure which should be displayed and made available to parents. If you feel your concerns have not been adequately dealt with, contact Manchester Play for advice.
