The single most important factor in delivering our aspirations for children, young people and families is a world-class workforce able to provide highly personalised support.

Manchester requires a well-led workforce delivering a high quality services to improve outcomes for its children, young people and families.

High quality services can have a significant impact on children's development, performance at school and their future life chances. In order to achieve this it is essential to have a workforce that:

  • Is professional, well qualified and dedicated
  • Is skilled, competent and well led
  • Is confident and safe to work with children and young people
  • Strives to achieve the best possible outcomes for all children, young people and families
  • Parents, children and other professionals trust and respect
  • People aspire to be part of and want to remain in - where they can develop

What we do

Our core function is to lead on integrated workforce planning and development across the directorate and wider Children's Workforce in Manchester.

This includes the development of multi-agency teams, integrated skills development programmes and qualifications.

We also design, develop and commission workforce development events and activities; to support, recognise and improve individual service and directorate performance.

The team also offer a range of business support to the directorate and wider workforce including planning, performance and change management, events facilitation and co-ordination, workforce intelligence and performance data.

How we do it

We work in consultation with individuals, managers and services to identify workforce requirements that link to both national and local requirements but also the development needs of individuals, teams and services to enable them to plan activities that lead to improved performance and delivery against business objectives.

We also focus on building workforce capacity by developing the skills of people within Manchester's communities who may be aspiring to work with children, young People and families in the City or who may want advice about training, education and employment opportunities.

The service also provides support for the delivery of service improvement projects and change management programmes.

By working closely in partnership with our colleagues across the Children's Workforce in Manchester we aim to ensure that all agencies working with children, young people and families have an opportunity to learn and work effectively together and share a common vision and objectives.

Some of our partners include private, independent and voluntary sector organisations, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Primary Care Trust, Job Centre Plus, Manchester Libraries and Leisure, University of Manchester and the Strategic Health Authority.
