How the service works now

Assessments

The service assesses the needs of children with sensory impairments to find out what support they need to access their education and support their development. It works to support them and provides advice and guidance for families, nurseries and state funded schools about this.

Support for children, families and education providers

They work with nurseries and state-funded schools to provide:

  • direct teaching for children with sensory impairments by giving training and support to schools, other education providers and families
  • advice and information about support for educators and families
  • help for the different organisations working with the child
  • help for children to become more independent
  • support with ‘hearing and visual technology’, such as hearing aids and electronic magnifiers.

‘Resource bases’ providing direct support to children with hearing needs.

Lancasterian Sensory Support Service runs four hearing impairment ‘resource bases’. These provide specialist support for children with significant hearing needs, allowing them to be educated in a mainstream school, those bases are:

  • St John’s Church of England School in Longsight (Primary)
  • Alma Park School in Levenshulme (Primary)
  • St Andrew’s Church of England School in Levenshulme (Primary)  
  • Manchester Academy, Moss Side (Secondary)
