Consultations and surveys Closed consultation: proposed changes to the sensory service for children with visual and hearing impairments

Changes to how we support children, families and education providers

We are consulting on some new proposals for this service. Read and comment on the new proposals.

At the moment the specialist teachers who work in the service spend most of their time providing direct teaching support to children. We will keep doing this for the children with the highest level of sensory impairments. All visually impaired children are supported in the place where they are educated.

However, we propose that the service spends more time training and supporting classroom teachers, teaching assistants and special education needs co-ordinators so they will be better able to support sensory impaired pupils in mainstream schools.

The training Lancasterian Sensory Service will provide to schools includes:

  • maintenance, management and use of specialist equipment to support learning and interaction
  • advice and information about education and family support
  • working with a range of organisations
  • helping children develop their independence
  • hearing technology support
  • yearly general training on supporting children with sensory impairments
  • special training for staff who need a deeper knowledge of the issues children with sensory impairments face
  • advice and support when a child is newly diagnosed with a sensory impairment.

We will review the support we give to special schools to make sure the staff are aware of the adjustments they need to put in place to support children, along with their other special educational needs. We will also continue providing the relevant training and support to these schools.

We will also continue having a specialist team to advise on the maintenance, management and use of specialist equipment to support children with learning and interaction.

The deadline for comments on these proposals is Thursday 21 July.
