Why PFI?
Successful PFIs are already bringing real improvements to two parts of Manchester. The Grove Village area of Ardwick (around Plymouth Grove), and Miles Platting just north of the city centre, are enjoying the results of huge investment. Local tenants have seen their homes refurbished to modern standards; and brand new homes to rent and buy are attracting new people to boost local communities.
Huge difference
"Its 24 years since my home was last refurbished", says Lynn who lives in the Miles Platting PFI area. "I found it much easier this time. The messiest part was the rewiring, but the workmen really went out of their way for me and my daughter. Some homes needed more work than others, but we could use a flat nearby to have a break during the day.
"The refurbishment has made such a huge difference. Fantastic kitchen, great doors, lovely new windows. We feel really safe and warm. Great for my heating bills too!
"The workmen had real respect for the tenants; I really felt I could trust them. I knew there was always someone at the end of the phone if I had any problems. When you see the end product it's definitely worth it. It needed to be done and I'd go through it all over again to get such a lovely home".
