The future of council housing: West Gorton
Big changes for a brighter future
People living in West Gorton are looking forward to a brighter future as plans to regenerate the area take shape.
Over 140 homes homes have transferred from the Council to Guinness Northern Counties Housing Association, a not-for-profit landlord that is investing millions of pounds on home improvements and estate upgrades.
The transfer is just part of an exciting package of plans to transform the whole of West Gorton . . .
New council homes
We've started building 171 new council homes on four sites across the area. The new, high-quality rented houses and apartments will all be ready for local people by March 2012.
As well as these new council homes, local landlord Guinness Northern Counties are building 33 new homes on the site of the old Carrisbrook centre to offer even more housing choice for local people.

Room for the future
To make way for all the new homes and better local facilities we will demolish the 380 council homes that didn't transfer to Guinness Northern Counties. But there will be no demolitions until we're sure where the people who are affected want to live.

The empty site at the junction of Hyde Road and Clowes Street is earmarked for a new neighbourhood centre with new shops, medical centre and chemist.
