The future of council housing: West Gorton

Big changes for a brighter future

West Gorton is gearing up for some big changes and a brighter future when regeneration work gets underway.

There'll be lots of activity on local streets across the neighbourhood as several projects start to change the face of the area.

If you live here we'll contact you with full details about how you're affected.

Council home transfer

A ballot of people living in 146 council homes saw an overwhelming vote to transfer homes and estate to Guinness Northern Counties Housing Association.

If you live in one of these homes you can look forward to big improvements such as new kitchens, bathrooms and windows, and a better environment. Work should start in late 2010, as soon as the transfer goes ahead officially.

Find out more about the transfer.

New council homes

The previous government gave the go-ahead to exciting plans to build 171 new council homes here in the next couple of years. Four sites have been earmarked for the new houses and apartments.

We are asking the new government to confirm that the promised funding is still coming. We'll let you know as soon as we hear.

Room for the future

We're planning for the regeneration of the area by buying up some land and property. We're fencing off some sites and getting them ready for a new use. You may see people surveying the land, digging, and taking soil samples.

We'll knock down the old Carrisbrook centre and the Wellington pub. The empty site at the junction of Hyde Road and Clowes Street is earmarked for a new neighbourhood centre with new shops, medical centre and chemist.

If you're directly affectd by work like this, we'll give you full details of what will happen.

Making way through demolition

We have to demolish Wenlock, Armitage, Benedict and Ashover Courts, the nearby maisonettes and flats, and a few houses to make way for all the new homes and facilities.

But there will be no demolitions until we're sure what the people who are affected want to do.
